One of the greatest challenges for treating cocaine addiction is preventing relapse. As shown in the diagram below, cocaine addiction is a chronic, relapsing brain disorder. Although abstinence can be achieved, relapse rates remain high.

Using an animal model of craving and relapse (the “incubation model”), the Loweth Lab investigates neuroadaptations that drive persistent vulnerability to relapse, with the ultimate goal of developing treatment strategies to maintain abstinence in recovering addicts.
