She is a leader and innovator in the area of curriculum development and has become a nationally and internationally known expert in teaching. She completed her Ph.D. studies in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis in 1993. After completion of her graduate studies, she worked as an environmental engineer for the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection (NDEP). Her research interests include removal of pollutants from water using various phyisco-chemical processes, bioremediation of contaminated groundwater and soils; the fate and transport of pollutants in the environment; and applied microbiology in environmental engineering. She has worked at all levels to advance engineering especially the representation of women and minorities.
Co-PI, Harriet Hartman is a sociologist who studied gender and engineering inthe formative years of Rowan’s College of Engineering (2001-2008) under the auspices of an NSF Powre Grant and subsequent University support. She also conducted a study on the applicant and admitted students’ pool of the College of Engineering through an Engineering Information Foundation (EIF) grant. She has extensive research experience, including survey research and focus group interviewing. Publications related to her work on STEM Education are shown inSection D [102-125]. She will be responsible for developing survey instruments, qualitative assessments, and providing guidance on curricular reform.
Project Coordinator, Tiago Forin is an engineering instructor at Rowan University. He has his Bachelor's in Civil Engineering from Florida State University and his Master's in Civil Engineering from Purdue University. He is currently active and involved in the engineering education community. He works closely with the PI, Dr. Farrell, and co-PIs Dr. Harriet Hartman, Dr. Jahan, and many faculty members at Rowan to foster a better climate of inclusion on campus. His main activities include being involved with developing propagation efforts, inclusive content and workshops, surveys and interviews for assessment, conducting interviews, assisting with data analyses and interpretation, project scheduling, communicating with other RED grant teams and preparation of reports. Along with his work on diversity and inclusive pedagogy, he is particularly focused on research on design thinking, cross-disciplinary practices, global competency development, and transformational learning.
External Evaluator, Theresa Bruckerhoff is the principal evaluator at Curriculum Research and Evaluation, Inc. (CRE). With 25 years of experience she has evaluated projects at the state and federal level. For RevED, she will conduct a non-biased project evaluation throughout the term of the project, including assisting in the development of evaluation and assessment tools and protocols, providing formative and summative evaluation data, and collaborating on all project reporting requirements.
Senior Personnel, Beena Sukumaran is currently Professor and Department Head of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Under her leadership, the Civil and Environmental Engineering Program has seen considerable growth in student and faculty numbers. She has been involved in various outreach activities to recruit more women and minorities into engineering and is Program Chair of the Women in Engineering Division of ASEE. She has considerable experience offering workshops and has done diversity training workshops for NSF-REU students. She also served as co-PI on an AAC&U Bildner grant, which involved inclusive pedagogy workshops for faculty at Rowan and resulted in 33 new interdisciplinary, team-taught Freshman classes that incorporated aspects of diversity and democracy. She will be responsible for the overall management of the project.
Senior Personnel, Ralph Dusseau Ph.D., P.E. is a professor of civil and environmental engineering at Rowan University. Dr. Dusseau’s areas of research include finite element computer modeling and field ambient vibration measurements of bridges and other structures. In addition, Dr. Dusseau is heavily involved in engineering education research. As the Founding Chair of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Rowan (1995 to 2008) and now as the Associate Chair (2014 to present), Dr. Dusseau has taken an very active role in transfer student advising and mentoring.
