Rowan University’s Animal Care Program
Rowan University considers animal studies critical to teaching and continued progress in medical, veterinary and scientific research, benefiting both animals and humans. Life-saving breakthroughs made possible through animal research include organ transplants, the development of vaccines, antibiotics and therapeutics, as well as improvements in surgical and diagnostic methods.
We maintain the highest ethical standards for the care and well-being of animals in research. When animal use is necessary, Rowan adheres to the principles of replacement, reduction and refinement. We aim to replace animals with alternative methods, reduce the number of animals used and refine procedures.
To ensure compliance with federal laws, regulations, and guidance, Rowan’s relevant committees review and approve all protocols and institutional programs involving the use of animals. Rowan University has an approved Assurance by the National Institutes of Health’s Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare, and is in compliance with the Public Health Service (PHS) Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. Rowan’s Animal Welfare Program is fully accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care, International (AAALAC).
