I am Weiling Cai. I am pursuing my doctoral degree in Civil Engineering at Rowan. I am working on the iFROST Mapper project funded by Development of Defense (DoD). We are developing a novel sensor technique that allows us to perform geophysical investigations on permafrost in cold regions. Basically, we utilize the principle of high-frequency electromagnetic induction to obtain the geotechnical information of underground conditions. It is challenging to conduct engineering activities in cold regions. However, with our technique, we are able to visualize the invisible ground conditions. Currently we have developed the prototype of the sensor, which has been used within the laboratory testing. We have submitted some manuscripts to the reputed journals, such as Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering, Geotechnique Letters, Soil Science Society of America Journal. We also present our research outcomes in the Geocongress conference (ASCE) and Transportation Research Board (TRB). I am highly enjoying in this project since it is an interdisciplinary topic. I have learned more interesting knowledge beyond Civil Engineering, such as electrical engineering, Maxwell equations, and electromagnetic wave propagation.
