Adding charcoal to the highly saturated mixture temporarily increases the total dissolved solids in the water until the oversaturation forces some of the dissolved dye to be ejected and interact with the charcoal, where it then gets absorbed and effectively removed from the water. In essence, the charcoal served as a crude water filter.
