Mission
The mission of the Rowan University Institutional Review Board (IRB) is to support the University's research enterprise by ensuring the protection of individuals who participate in research; ensuring compliance with all pertinent federal and state laws and regulations; fostering the ethical conduct of human subjects research; and providing education and other services to the University's researchers regarding regulatory requirements and best practices.

Updates
6/11/2026: SSN Exception – Gift Card Policy Update
Rowan University has implemented an SSN exception within its Gift Card Policy for select IRB-approved studies. This exception is limited to studies that collect anonymous data and involve vulnerable populations where participants receive no more than $50 in total gift card compensation.
Researchers are required to maintain all standard gift card records, distribute funds through ClinCard, and submit IRB approval documentation of the SSN exception to Finance along with the Gift Card Request Form. For additional guidance, please refer to the IRB Gift Card SSN Exception Guidance.
Conflict of Interest(COI)/Significant Financial Interest(SFI) Disclosure Form
COI/SFI disclosure forms are NOT REQUIRED when completing and submitting a Rowan Cayuse IRB submission.
- Principal Investigators and research team members will still have to identify and provide information about any conflict of interest and/or significant financial interest deemed a conflict in the IRB submission.
- Modifications for studies approved before June 18, 2025 must include the Conflict of Interest Attestation and Disclosure Form. This form ensures that all potential conflicts of interest are disclosed and reviewed appropriately.
Rowan Virtua Health College of Medicine & Life Sciences
The Rowan-Virtua Engagement Form is no longer required. If you plan to conduct human subjects research involving patients, data, or employees from any Virtua Health setting, including Rowan-affiliated practices, please refer to the updated guidance for projects involving Virtua Health to ensure proper IRB submission and compliance.

Participants
Choosing to participate in research as a participant is an important personal decision. If you identify or are asked by others to participate as a subject in human subjects research, please take time to learn about research. Please take time and go to the Office of Human Research Protections (OHRP) to learn more about the regulations, principles, and other pertinent information regarding human subjects research. If you have questions about your rights as a subject in research, feel free to contact the IRB Office.
Interested Public and Rowan University Faculty, Staff and Employees
If you are not a member of the Institutional Review Board but are interested in attending a scheduled and convened meeting, please contact the IRB office. Please note that as a guest attendee, you will be required to sign a Confidentiality Agreement. Other policies and procedures may be enforced as well, and may include but are not limited to no audio or video recordings of the meeting by any guest attendee.
