Research Integrity
Research misconduct in the U.S. had four (4) cases of research misconduct that occurred around the period of 1974 to 1981, resulting in the U.S. federal government to enact the Health Research Extension Act of 1985. This act, amongst other things, required PHS to develop and include specific requirements for PHS-funded institutions to follow when alleged research misconduct has occurred at a PHS-funded institution.
In 2005, PHS published PHS Policy on Research Misconduct, codified at 42 CFR Part 93.
Research misconduct can occur at different times in the research lifecycle (proposals, conduct, publication), including certain activities like human subjects and animal research. Some misconduct in research is not so obvious and can be complicated to navigate, which include but is not limited to authorship. The Office of Research Compliance and Research Integrity Officer is available to assist in any inquiries, allegations of misconduct and generally provide guidance.
